Tooth Decay and Crowns

Posted .

Tooth decay is a serious matter that demands immediate attention. Unfortunately, every year millions of Americans ignore or put off having a cavity repaired. Left unchecked these cavities can continue to spread across the tooth enamel and deeper into the sensitive internal structures of the tooth.

When tooth decay is too extreme to be repaired by a basic filling Grand Trails Dental will often recommend having the entire enamel layer of the tooth restored with a crown made from either gold, base metals or porcelain.

Before starting the process of fitting the tooth for a crown Grand Trails Dental will conduct a thorough examination of the tooth and take a few X-rays. This helps us to make sure that the pulp and root of the tooth are still healthy and have the structural integrity to anchor a crown.

Your dentist will then form an abutment, by removing the majority of the tooth enamel. This small post will later serve to anchor your crown in place.

The dentist will then create an impression of the abutment, as well as the corresponding teeth. Then a temporary crown is cemented over the abutment to keep it safe.

The impression will be sent to our professional dental lab, where a team of skill technician will custom craft a crown to restore your tooth.

Once the permanent crown is completed Grand Trails Dental will call you back in for another appointment. You can expect this appointment to be brief. The temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented in place. Your new tooth should serve you for many years to come!

If you have a tooth suffering from a large cavity, you should call Grand Trails Dental as soon as possible at 832-616-8822 to schedule an appointment.
